Seasonal Mood Board | Winter 2018

Last year we did a blog series called Monthly Mood Boards.  At the start of every month we shared a mood board with images and colors we were crushing on for that month.  We had so much fun with this series and we hope that you found inspiration in them.  We loved this series so much that we have decided to carry it over to this year; however, for 2018, we will be sharing the boards seasonally rather of monthly!  We are smack dab in the middle of winter so it is the perfect time to share our Winter Mood Board.

Despite that fact that it doesn’t really feel like winter here in So Cal, I’m still enjoying all of the lovely things that come with winter – warm drinks, wearing boots, and cozy nights in with my family.  From a design perspective, when I think of winter I think of warm welcoming colors and lots of texture.  We incorporated both of these things into this season’s mood board.  I’m obsessed with all things velvet and though velvet can be used all year long, I think winter is the season when it really shines!  I love combining rich velvet with more flowy fabrics like silk and chiffon for a unexpected contrast.  As you may know, I always like to include a metallic (or mixed metallics) in my designs.  Gold has been the go to metallic for quite a while and it feels refreshing and fitting to include silver as the metallic in this board.  The dark blue reminds us that we are still in the depths of winter (in some places at least 🙂 but we also incorporated some beautiful peaches and dusty blues to remind us that spring is right around the corner.

It is crazy to think it is already December and the year is coming to an end!  Today I’m excited to share my final Monthly Mood Board of the year with you!  There is so much to celebrate in the month of December so instead of focusing on a specific holiday, I’ve created a board that is full of glitz and glam and I hope it provides you with inspiration for pretty much any December soirée!  The color palette of black, creams, metallics, and a hint of blush is moody, glamorous, and the perfect way to welcome winter.  Sequins are everywhere this time of the year, from clothing to table linens – December is definitely the month sequins shine most!  In addition to sequins, I’ve incorporated luxurious velvet and sassy leather to add depth and texture.  As you can imagine, I am a big fan of stars and think they are the perfect addition to holiday events.  Although this mood board lends itself to pretty much any winter celebration, I think it is particularly perfect for a New Years Eve party!

I used this mood board as inspiration for the holiday party I threw for my Star Hansen Events team this past weekend.  My team of administrative and event assistants is so incredible and I wanted to treat them to a really special evening in celebration of them and their dedication to our events!  They know better than anyone how much work goes into designing and planning a special event and I spared no detail when planning their holiday party.  I used the color palette and many of the design elements shown in this mood board.  It turned out beautiful and we all had an amazing time.  I can’t wait to share photos from this super special event.  Stay tuned!

It has finally cooled down here in So Cal and after the crazy heatwaves we had in October, the cooler weather is very welcome!  As we begin to spend more time indoors in our cozy home, my family and I start using the word “hygge” a lot!  Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) is a Danish word that can mean many things but loosely translates to “cozy togetherness” or “the art of creating intimacy”.  It can be used as both a verb and an adjective – “What a hyggeig living room!” or “It was so hyggeligt to see you!”, but to me, Hygge is a feeling.  Growing up in a Danish home, hygge was a word we used often.  This time of year I like to bring it out in my home and for my family by lighting candles, baking sweet treats, and cozying up by the fire.

The feeling of hygge was my inspiration for this months mood board.  Hot drinks, sweet treats and warm color tones are all things that make me feel hygge.  I incorporated traditional fall colors and elements, allowing the copper tones to really pop!  It is amazing how the addition of a metallic can really glam things up!  I love the warm richness this season brings and wanted it to shine through on this board while still keeping the overall ascetic very fresh and clean – just the way I like it!

October Monthly Mood Board | Hello Fall!

If you know me, you know that summer is my favorite season but since fall is here I must embrace the change right? Though it is sad to say goodbye to the long days and warm nights of summer, I always get a little bit excited when October comes around.  In my eyes, it is the unofficial start of the holiday season.  I love festive decor and traditions and this is the time of year when all of that fun begins!  I’ve always enjoyed Halloween – I remember begging my mom to pull out the Halloween decorations so I could decorate our front porch for the three or four trick-or-treaters that we got every year.  I have fond memories of trick-or-treating in pretty costumes, ending the night with a bag full of candy (my favorites were always Sour Patch Kids and good old fashioned candy corn!). Halloween is even more fun now that I’m a mother.  I’ve so enjoyed the early years of my kid’s lives when I could choose cute coordinating costumes but we are now at the point where they want to choose their own.  This year my son has decided to be a king (complete with a scepter) and my daughter wants to be little orphan Annie.  I can’t wait to take them trick-or-treating!

As much as I love coming up with unexpected color palettes for my Monthly Mood Boards, I felt like keeping things a bit more traditional and aligned with the season this month.  When I think of October, I think of Halloween which makes me picture black, white and orange.  So, this month’s mood board is inspired by Halloween and those typical colors that come with it.  With black and orange being at the forefront, I thought it would be nice to bring in shades of white and gray to offset the predictable and sometimes cheesy vibe that orange and black can give.  These neutrals make the overall look a bit more grown up and the gold adds a bit of glam!

September Monthly Mood Board | Going Bold With Teal and Mustard Yellow

Over the past couple of years I’ve had a love affair with teal and while blush pink (or ballet slipper pink as I used to call it) has been my favorite color since I was a little girl, teal is now definitely up there!  I find myself drawn to it for home decor, apparel, heck – even when choosing a crayon to color with my kiddos!  Teal feels elegant and chic (a grown up version of turquoise in my opinion) yet is still super bold and playful.  I incorporated teal into a styled shoot I designed at Vibiana last year and loved how the color popped against all of Vibiana’s white marble.  This shoot was featured on Green Wedding Shoes – you can check it out on my blog here.

I’m a big fan of unexpected color combinations and September’s Monthly Mood Board fits the bill.  The three feminine neutrals complement the bold and moody mustard yellow and teal so beautifully!  I don’t recommend overdoing it with teal or mustard yellow at an event, but a few pops here and there would be gorgeous and unexpected! Some of my favorite ways to incorporate these colors is through cocktails, cakes, ribbon details and lounge furniture. It doesn’t need to be in every detail, but a couple of hints can really bring a reception to life!

Fall officially starts later this month and I think the colors and design elements in this board are a really great way to transition into the new season.  Although today we are expected to hit a high of 98 degrees where I am (no joke!!!), we all know fall is upon us.  I’m seeing pumpkin spice everything at coffee shops (which is not my thing but I know some people looooove it) which means fall is right around the corner.  I’m a summer girl through and through so it does make me a little sad but with the weather being so hot, I know we still have a few more weeks of summer left!  I’m going to soak it up!

August Monthly Mood Board

Can you believe it is officially August! This summer is flying by and although flip flop weather is still in full swing, the end of the summer is near.  As much as it makes me a little sad to admit, the fun bright colors will soon be faseing out with fall quickly approaching! I am a big fan of colors. especially in the summer months, but I love neutrals just as much! They feel so fresh and clean and are very welcome after months of fun and playful summer colors like the mood boards from June and July!

Some of my favorite neutral combinations are with mixed metallics and different shades of blush. I consider blush a neutral, especially since it can come in so many shades – from peachy, grayish, to mauve toned.  It is romantic and feminine and perfect for weddings – and when combined with traditional neutrals such as beige, cream, and gray, it becomes slightly less “girlie”.  Of course white has to be included in this board, it is the heart of a bridal color palette and can be so easily combined with greenery, like my mood board for March!  I love a predominately white wedding and think bits of other neutrals bring depth to an all white wedding.

So what do you think? Are you up for an all-neutral wedding? I think this board sells it for me!

July Monthly Mood Board

Fourth of July is right around the corner which means summer is in full swing!  I couldn’t be happier – despite the crazy heat we’ve been experiencing, I absolutely LOVE summer!  Enjoying longer days is kind of a given, but there are a number of other things that make summer my favorite season:

  1. Allowing my kiddos to run around our backyard in their undies for hours, playing in the water or doing messy art projects
  2. Summer produce (particularly watermelon and peaches)
  3. Eating every meal outside
  4. Tie dying
  5. Rose all day (ok, lets be honest, I’m past the point of “all day”, but Rose… for a few hours 😉 )

Another reason why I love summer is Fourth of July!  It is one of my favorite holidays because I just love the excitement it evokes!  It is a low pressure holiday full of fun activities and good food!  Often times, red, white, and blue, make people think of Firecracker Popsicles, stars and stripes, and fireworks.  I love all of these things on the Fourth of July and have been known to make fruit platters designed to look like the American Flag.

The colors red, white, and blue don’t typically make people think of weddings, but I challenge you to think differently about them.  If you darken the red and blue shades to more of a crimson and navy, pair it with a creamy white, and pop in a little bit of mauvy pale pink –  you have a gorgeous unexpected color combination!  Patriotic red, white, and blue were my inspiration for this month’s mood board, but I enjoyed glamming these colors up a bit and taking this color combination to the next level.  This look would be beautiful for a July wedding… or any time of the year!  With the dark hues, it lends itself to fall and winter weddings as well.  In fact, my clients Kathryn and Scotty utilized a similar color palette for their wedding last January.  Click here to see photos from their wedding.

June Monthly Mood Board | Neons!

By | Inspiration, Mood Boards | No Comments

Summer is upon us and I couldn’t be happier!  There are things to love about every season but summer is hands down my favorite!  I love the sunshine and warm weather, the summer produce, and eating every meal outside!  We have lots of amazing weddings ahead of us this summer and I can’t wait to watch our couples tie the knot!

I planned a wedding in Palm Springs last month for two amazing grooms and the whole day was such a dream.  Their love was electric and their wedding so beautiful.  They incorporated lots of unique elements into their wedding decor and it made for a very memorial day for everyone!  I can’t wait to share more about this wedding on my blog – stay tuned!  My assistant and I  stayed at the Saguaro, which is known for tons of colors! Each room is actually a different panel of colors – even the A/C unit is neon. We got the chance to explore the property a bit, and fell in love with the vibe and wanted to bring a little of it to you!  The funky fun neon colors at this hotel were my inspiration for this month’s mood board.  Although they might not be everyone’s cup of tea for a wedding – you can’t deny that they scream playful summer fun!  These colors would be the perfect addition to a summer pool party, bbq, or bachelorette party.

Neons can feel overwhelming really quickly if overdone.  I love pops of neon paired with a neutral color palette.  Neon colors are unexpected paired with wood, stoneware, or kraft paper and I love this look!  You can also consider selecting just a few neon colors rather than using the whole slew of them.  Kids love them (especially when paired with a black light) and they bring out the inner child in adults!  Palm Springs or not – give this look a try this summer!

May Monthly Mood Board | Bring on the pastels!

By | Inspiration, Mood Boards | No Comments

We are smack-dab in the middle of spring and I’m loving the longer warmer days.  Although summer is right around the corner and we may have our minds on the beach and summer activities – spring is still in full swing and May, one of my favorite months has just begun.  I love May for many reasons.  For starters, my birthday is in May and so is Mother’s Day (two of my favorite days of the year… obviously).  May is also when my backyard roses bloom like crazy and peonies are abundant at flower shops (Trader Joe’s offers the most beautiful ones for a really great price in the weeks before Mother’s Day).  The end of May is also the unofficial start to summer which is always so much fun!  As we enjoy the last full month of spring I think it’s time for delicate and soft pastel colors to come out and play!  They were my inspiration for May’s Monthly Mood Board.

I love pastels at spring and summer events.  Over the years they’ve been a go-to for weddings but they have to be used cautiously to avoid an outdated look.  I love when pastels are paired with neutrals and mixed metallics.  I also love it with lots of white and lucite for a crisp and clean ascetic.  Using various shades of a few pastel colors (e.g. pinks and purples or blues and greens) is lovely but I also think that a mix of a variety of pastels can be really pretty if done right.

Water color is a great way to incorporate pastels into your event design.  Although watercolor has been quite popular in recent years, the trend doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.  Whimsy pastel florals are always gorgeous and I love the ‘dipped’ watercolor linen shown on the board – it is such a fun way to add a  little color to an all white tablescape allowing the linen to pop from the table, instead of blending in.  Its all so gorgeous!

April Monthly Mood Board | Spring Has Sprung!

By | Mood Boards | 3 Comments

Spring has officially sprung here in Southern California so I was inspired to bring in some fun springy colors to our Mood Board this month. Because of the all of the rain we received this winter, the grass is greener than it has been in years, the flowers are showing their colors just a little bit more than usual, and wedding planing is in full swing over here at Star Hansen Events!

When creating mood boards, I love bringing together unexpected decor pairings and unique color combinations to inspire and show versatility.  Now don’t get me wrong, I love neutral weddings, and blush and gold are some of my favorite colors; however, lately I have been loving the addition of bright bold color into some of my designs and pushing those wedding boundaries that we all know and love.  Mint and peach are a beautiful and well loved color combination, but I really like the addition of bright berry and bold green shown below.  It takes this color combination to the next level and I just love it!

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been taking in all of the fresh blooms showing their faces on the hillsides in my neighborhood and we’ve been enjoying spring’s delicious produce!  My kids and I have also been doing lots of outdoor art projects.  Painting on all kinds of surfaces and with all types of tools has been a favorite activity lately.  The stunning backdrop showcased on this board inspires me to create something similar… for what?  I don’t know!  But I’m pretty sure I could find a use for something so lovely!  What have you and your family been up to this Spring?  I’d love to hear!
